Whilst there’s a lot of info out there and such for the 30 hours I’m struggling a bit with both my sons nursery and the gov site for those eligible for 15.

I was told earlier by the nursery that it is done automatically and when child hits 3 at the beginning of the next term the bill reduces without me having to do anything? But then she also went on to say that I should apply for 30 anyway as it didn’t combine salaries? My trust in the manager to provide proper guidance is low.

Assuming she is right, this seems odd as for 30 you need to do something in the gov gateway site, but whenever I try and look on official websites for 15 specifically it says contact your provider to find out more - anyone done this and can confirm what if anything I need to do?

Are you not already paying the provider via the tax free childcare site here?

https://childcare-support.tax.service.gov.uk/par/a...

If not then you will ned to create an account and on that site there you will see the code for the is the 15 'free' hours. It becomes active when they turn 3 but you cant use it until the following term I believe.

To apply for the 30 hours you need to fill in this form: https://www.gov.uk/30-hours-free-childcare

It's best to open the tax free childcare account and apply for the 30 hours, it will guide you for eligabilty.

All children are eligible for 15 hours.

Some children (income dependant) are eligible for 30 hours.

With the childcare account if you pay in £80, the government top it up to £100, this can also be used for other childcare, after school clubs & tuition.

Also if any readers/posters are eligible for universal credit you get 85% of the gross nursery bill paid.

Thanks both, I am pretty sure neither of us (both earn over the threshold) are eligible for tax free childcare, or 30 hours, hence asking about 15 - I have gone through the process for the 30 and obviously as soon as you get to the earnings question it bumps you out.

This is partly the issue I'm facing because it seems almost a social faux pas to tell the nursery staff in front of a load of other parents that I already know I don't qualify for it, so can you please let me know what/if anything I need to do for the 15 hours. The stupid thing is that it being an expensive London nursery, many parents must have asked this question of her and she still basically told me that I must be adding our salaries together to not be eligible. Its frustrating.

You get the 15 hours no matter what your earnings are when they turn 3.

To see the code that you need to give to the provider you log in to the tax free childcare account (whether you use that or not). There may be other ways to see/get the code but I have always used the tax free portal.

Yes, I know I get it, but HOW DO I GET IT hehe this is the krux of my problem.

I get booted out of that link before I get to any actual 'account' creation because of earnings, this is the issue. If they need a code (which she has said they don't?) then how the hell do I get it. Idiotic system it seems.

The 15 hours is automatic, the threshold is 100k net adjusted income per person (income less gross pension contributions at £1.25 for every £1.00 etc, 40k pension contribution factors 50k off your income).

TBH its worth applying for them to say you're not eligible, then you won't get a reminder every 3 months to reapply, its a 5 min application, and the staff at the nursery will just process the code they are given vs your bill.

Additionally should your circumstances change the application is in place, it's just details of circumstance that are updated, which will then feed through the nursery for billing.

Ok, so actually she is right, I do not need to do anything at all?

I've just done the application again and it boots me at the earnings screen, no code or account can be created from my side, but based on your first sentence, that doesn't matter as they'll be sent something regardless from the Gov?

This 15 hours of free childcare is known as universal funding and is available from the term after your child turns 3. You do not need to apply for universal funding but you do need to speak to your childcare provider and complete a parent declaration form to secure your child’s place and hours.

Interesting. He's been there 2 years anyway, so doubt I need to do that, but perhaps there is a declaration form or something, appreciate the digging there thank you.

Correct--this is what my wife and I had to do (complete a form but the rest is handled by the nursery). We have had to reapply (for some reason) after two terms but I suspect that may not be a requirement (as we've not been asked to do so again).
