Bit of a mundane question, I can’t pay in a cheque using my ipad by taking a photo etc. like I’ve done hundreds of times before. I enter the cheque amount, click next but I then receive the message ‘license error ok’ and can’t proceed any further. It’s a Virgin account. Thanks for any pointers.

I had similar to this with the HSBC app on my Android phone. it used to work fine...It did at the end.of May but since then I hadn't been able to. I take a photo of the front then it would log me out with a 'you're backing session is expired' before I could take a photo of the back.
I then collected two cheques, both the same - unable to pay in for around two months. I was being blinded between HSBC support and app support, but it went nowhere.

In the end I gave in and went to the branch the next time I was ina town that had one. Pain the backside for sure

In person you mean? No doubt, as I could my nearest Virgin bank which is about a hundred yards from the post officelaugh Not sure why it’s suddenly stopped working, it’s brilliant for smaller cheques, not having to trudge to the bank, ‘tis 2023 after all. I Googled it but couldn’t find any reference to the problem, maybe it’s just me they don’t like. I’m not Nigel Farage btw.

I had a similar problem and it turned out I had already deposited it and got it mixed up with one I had not. Might be worth checking.

^ It’s not that, I didn’t even get as far as taking a pic. I’ll leave it a few days and see if sorts itself out.

Technology is wonderful when it works, but an utter pain in the backside when it doesn't.

Careful using the post office to pay into a HSBC account. I had a problem with the App. Took cheque to PO who send it off in a very convincing paying in slip with the cheque. Never go put into my account. At the end of the PO process they basically use an equivalent (or did, 2022) App to scan the cheque and if it didn't work......black hole.

I always assume it went physically in the post from the PO to a bank.

When I saw the sub-postmaster whilst I was trying to work out where money had gone he said this was common for cheques that failed banks Apps and they were now warning customers of this. Ombudsman and photo of cheque plus screen print of trying on App got me my money, but took 11 months.

Putting this to bed, the function is now working, ghosts in the machine I guess; or some muppet in IT pressed the wrong button!

TBH branches also scan the cheques in exactly the same way the Post Office do, so possible it was an issue with that cheque specifically. Even when they used to be sent off from bank branches, they were still scanned by a company somewhere.

There are a couple of checks in place, firstly when scanning them they do have to be physically checked by someone to ensure what's been scanned matches the data thats' pulled from a cheque. Then, what should happen is the day after they're scanned, any errors or issues are sent back to the post office branch/bank branch to be reviewed and resolved. So it would come down to the person who looks at that error report as to how much effort they make to resolve the issue.

It's more reliable than it sounds but it's usually the pink soft bit in the middle of the tech that causes the issue.

Great the way the Post Office don't actually post it, despite being called a post office and having thousands of postmen, but send it into the same tech hole you fell into you. That's progress folks. If I get a cheque I just post it when I go past the box.
