Long story here - so will try to keep to the salient points.... A few weeks back, i clicked on an ad on MSN home page (trusted media, right?) rolleyes for an AI trading platform...

Like everyone, we've been pissing around in this space - its application potentails in advertising are pretty crazy - but thats for another story.... anyhows...

I think an AI based trading platform sounds quite intersting (then again - i think an early varient of this contributed to the crashing the stock market in the late eighties...)

I put my deets on the form, and get a call back from a guy whos sets me up on the Nord Capital trading platform - interesting gamified 'follow this guys strategy' type stuff.

Some sketchy (to my eye) payment mechanic, such that i transact in Bulgaria to put my first deposit in the 'account' I'm passed over from what feels like the sales team to a broker... 'benjamin watson' who contacts me on whassap

Two things then happen:

1) this guy is pestering me CONSTANTLY 'when can we talk' 'there is opportunity' 'bitcoin is on the rise, we should act now'.

He's alway going on about the 'halving' and unethical opportunites for removal of Btcoing from bent politiciants in asia (cool story)

2) i'm getting calls all fuking day from random 'brokers' from all over the worls who are trying to sell me - well, to be fair, I dont really know as i didnt take the calls. So i get the arse with Benjamins and his willful distribution of my details across the scam-net

So, we're scant on detail but Benjamin is keen that i buy a special discounted bitcoin (South Korean Political story)
its only £17k so can realise and immediate profit overnight

They can split them in two though - so £8.5 is all thats needed for this no brainer..

By this time I'm getting annoyed with the constant barrage of call and lack of paper trail on pretty much every thing so benjamin brings in the big guns.

David O'brien is his supervisor, and calls me to say he has reset the client relationship (?) to make sure all correspondance now goes via email and and look he's HSBC Innovation Bank and everything rolleyes

(note the 24 in the email addy)

By now i'm pretty sure I know whats going on - then out of the blue i get another call from a sligthly tetchy lady from Nord Capital - wants to speak urgently about my account - I have a call scheduled with her tomorrow morning.

There are layers to this thing:

the brokers gets you to set up a coinbase wallet and then returns profit to this - but its all to build confidence and get you to pop in more - then they vanish like ghosts....

I am not a mug, (honest) and have treated this from the off with a heavy degree of scepticism - but thought it would be worth posting here so that if anyone else falls into a similar patteren and searches 'Nord Capital' they find this.

they make a big this about being 'in london' (lets just say its more brick lane than broadgate) and pointing to a seemingly bona-fide companise house ID:

https://find-and-update.company-information.servic...

Why am i posting now? - to be honest - i was pretty embarrassed to have been suckered in intitially, i'm massively relieved that i did not put any more than my initial stake in.

I do have a slighly better understanding of bitcoin, so its not a total loss situation...

and also, importatnly, this was not a direct approach - i clicked on an ad - on what I previously viewed as a reasonably trustworthy site.

I can see totally how these muthafkers rinse pensioners from their life savings....

just goes to show what a wild west it really is out there at the mo.

Out of interest, how much did you lose? I assume the fact that you are a dead cert means that they are particularly keen to keep you in the game.

No criticism at all but knowing nothing about what has been portrayed to be offered, the messages and emails look scammer than a scammy thing from scamsville

Had a friend that retired from work.
He had a good sum of money from the early retirement.

He did exactly as you did, but for added idiocy went further and bought this magical BTC.

Weeks of calls not being returned, answers being muddled and false promises, he's a few k lighter.

It was embrassing for him to talk about it, but he did... not sure his wife knows but super cautious now and it hsa put a massive dent in his confidence.

Bravo for putting the post together and warning others - too often the old adage, "if it's too good ot be true ....." is forgotten when large returns are promised. But this is the time to be extra cautious!!

Hopefully the sum lost is not too much and can be offset by knowing you didn't add the £8.5k (which is approx the sum that my less fortunate firned will never see again from this bunch of crooks)

Whilst I understand how you may have been sucked in, I’ve always been of the mindset that if someone has the know how or technology to make heavy ROI’s, there’s very little chance that they are going to bring others in on it as it’ll only hurt their own earnings.

Only person who I’ve known to do similar (and legitimate) doesn’t take peoples actual investments, they are incredibly intelligent and knowledgeable in sports betting, so they charge people £5 a month to view what they are betting on(but only after they’ve placed their own bets so not to hurt the odds for themselves).

I applaud you for speaking out and admitting you were scammed. There are lots of victims daily falling for various scams and it's easy to sit on the sidelines thinking how obvious something might have seemed.

The above correspondance are all post registration (& deposit) - so yes - it easy to say in hindsight this is 100% a scam (the sites are not even there any more and my bitcoin deposit isn't what it was, despite a number

Trust me, I did look into this in detail prior to being suckered in.

There is a London office registered

Some funds were returned - the platform appeared to have the relevant links out for t's & c's etc.

I feel I checked a lot, many wouldn't have

The subsequent sales upsell calls bordered on the hypnotic.

I'm sharing so the link is here so anyone searching other folks don't lose out

To be brutally honest, your so-called "checks" was both ineffective (what exactly was you checking?) and wasteful if you continue to ignore basic red flags such as Bulgarian bank account and follow this guys strategy etc....

If it helps anyone, the FCA has a dedicated page outlining the various types and how these "get rich quick" scams operate (see below)

I beg to differ.

Obvious as a shovel to the face.

Friend of mine fell for this over the last few years - all seemed to be going well and professional then they just disappeared with about 30k of his money which was invested in crypto. It’s quite a big scam and police are involved but nobody is ever getting their money back.

There was a story I caught on BBC Rip-off Britain yesterday morning I think it was about this. Chap lost £120'000. It's amazing what people fall for.
