Happy / unhappy self assessment story
Discussion
I have a bit of a duffer of a rental property, small mortgage, after a short void the last year's self assessment worked out as £1.20 owed (yes £1.20).
Didn't have to pay anything on account in the summer. My SA I've just done worked out as £1,700 owed (no voids, small property expenses). Final inland revenue screen comes up as I'm actually £1,900 in credit, nothing owed.
1) Don't know how this has happened, my job hasn't changed although bonuses have varied a bit. Has anyone else had surprise surpluses?
2) I get plenty of text reminders to fill in my self assessment but at no point through the year has the IR told me actually I'm in credit do I want my own money back...
Happy but a bit miffed.

I did my tax return in April and received a repayment mid-Jan. I'd forgotten about it in the meantime so was a nice surprise, especially as it appears to be double what it says my credit was (Eric told me not to spend it
).
My wife did her tax return in mid-Jan and received her repayment a day before me!

Interesting, is that roughly comparable sort of figures, because for me on an average sort of salary to find I've overpaid £1900 is quite significant, it's an error of about 10%.

Obviously I'm wondering if it's going to swing 20% in the wrong direction next year.
