HMRC are their usual mysterious selves and are utterly no help at all. not that I can even get hold of them.

I am on PAYE and self-assessment for a small business. My TAX code has been the same for years, until now.

In February, I had a letter from HMRC. Well... 2 in fact. and, come to think of it, they might be related.

The first was telling me that I owed them £3,077.55 from the self-assessment. I completed this earlier than usual in November, My assessment and accountant said I owed £3,195.98. I paid for this before the letter arrived. So should be in credit, according to HMRC? I have never had one of these letters before.

Anyway, a month later another letter arrived telling me my TAX code had changed. I now have the letter "T" at the end of it (The tax code will not change until it has been reviewed by us), except... it just has?

And, apparently, I'm getting "Less medical insurance £349". I don't have medical insurance.

My accountant doesn't have any idea, my PAYE work doesn't have any idea, HMRC is impossible to talk to, and do not know what way is up anyway. Can Pistonheads help shed some light on what's going on here?

Hi

if you havre a Government Gateway ID, you can log on to the HMRC web site and check your tax code info - how much taxable PAYE earnings they think you will have, How much you owe, or are in credit, and what taxable benefits they are including.

You can also adjust it directly on the web site to remove benefits, change the income etc, this will result in a new Tax Code within a couple of days.

Its all much easier online than trying to get through on the phone to discuss

This, although not necessarily going to give you full clarity. I noted my tax code had changed on my payslip - so I logged, in saw that it had changed, but had then also been changed AGAIN thereafter! The last time I had an email notifying me of a change, these two changes - nothing at all.

My changed too just after the new tax year.

Logged onto the gateway and for some reason they had estimated my earnings to be twice my salary. I sent them a message pointing out the mistake and it was changed about a week later.

The update didn't reach my employer in time for this months payroll run and I've been hit with a hefty tax deduction.

Similar, received a Code in Feb which seemed about correct, then received a second about two weeks ago that was obviously wrong. I'm a pensioner and take the occasional lump sum from a pension. They had assumed that one withdrawal in March was a monthly salary! I was suddenly earning 3 times my annual income taking me into the higher tax band. A venture into the Gateway seemed the answer except that since i hadn't been through that portal for 3 years I had to totally register. Still better than the hour long wait to speak to someone.
