Car Insurance Price - Is this the new normal?

Just got my renewal, the price has doubled (nothing has changed).
It's barely changed in years aside from say 5% ish per year price increase and I always shop around every year. This year I've tried 4 comparison sites as well as Direct Line and it's still moreorless double wherever I go.
Is this the same for others in general? I have heard from close relatives there's has also gone up significantly. Any one know of a vendor doing cheap insurance that is not on a comparison site? (Direct Line is not it, their price was 5 times my normal price.
