Barclays Fraud Protection
Discussion
i tried to move a 5 figure amount into a new cash isa today and in order to do so setup the Barclays app so the money moved instantaneously.
i had done a £1 non instant test payment a cpl of days ago via normal methods but it took 2 days to reach the receiver so was not happy moving a large amount that way so have the option of giving them permissions in the app to my current account.
i did, moved a test £1 and then £500 to make sure it worked. went to move the small 5 figure and it didnt go through. tried a smaller amount same story. called them up said oh flagged by fraud, understandable given the pattern of amounts, no issue, fraud team will call you. 3 hours later no call, called my helpline again managed to put me through. fraud team asked some odd questions which i answered but refused to unlock account and say i must go in branch and do a face to face, which is a massive inconvenience and means I'm losing out on interest, minimal i know, but could be situations thats its not, simply at the whim of some outsourced bod.
is this normal? or do i have cause to be miffed.

Why did you do the first "non-instant" transfer and what do you mean by that? I thought everything went Faster Payments these days. How long have you banked with Barclays and are these patterns and amounts of transfers normal on your account?

You can miffed, that's up to you, but it's perfectly normal, it's 'test' transfers just like yours that look like fraud. i had done a £1 non instant test payment a cpl of days ago via normal methods but it took 2 days to reach the receiver so was not happy moving a large amount that way so have the option of giving them permissions in the app to my current account.

You don't like it, take your custom elsewhere. The comment about lost interest though is priceless!

i have done such moves of test amounts before and had no issue.
i moved close to 6 figures in to buy a car a few years ago and the debit got blocked when i was in the dealership paying, thankfully i called them straight away and they released it... none of this branch bllx.

Barclays is a joke. Move ASAP.
Not trying to defend them because I will not use them. I think you need to look at the transaction pattern from their point of view because they are kind of damned if they do, damned if they don't.Personally, I would have spoken to them before making the transactions because it looks like and is a couple test transaction then whack with a big one without much context for them to decide if it is legit, fraud or money laundering.
I think the real issue is the difficulty in getting it unblocked, I don't know your history with Barclays but if short this would also work against getting it unblocked quickly.
I had a chaps transfer take a week from one bank to another( both my accounts) the receiving bank said they had no record of the transfer or an attempt during that week, I rang every day. I raised a complaint that was not upheld, apparently it went through fraud checking and they do not inform me in that case as security checks can take place for as in your case 5 figure sums.
I said I wasn't happy and they inferred, that I could take my account elsewhere if I didn't like their processes.

my beef is despite answering myriad security questions correctly, giving them all my special words, doing the app security bits, eg verifying the call, the fraud person triumphantly, it seemed, said you will have to go to branch in person to solve it she wouldn't unlock my account. now the app is blocked, and says give them a call. what if you are someone who cannot go to branch physically, what if you are abroad at the time, your screwed if so...can they hang you out to dry in such scenarios?
i've had fraud checks before and am grateful, but all have been done over the phone. I'm a 'premier' account holder and have been for years and banked with them all my life, at times am lazy and leave money with them that isn't gaining anything so they should like the long balances, so you would think they would aim to keep me happy. now looking to make my money work a bit they make it difficult.

The traditional bricks and mortar banks are trying to go fully online but they haven't quite abandoned all their physical processes and still need to resolve some things by going into one of their rapidly reducing number of physical branches.
First Direct is well established but they have always been fully telephone and now online and they don't have any physical branches and seem to have the processes to get stuff fixed without needing a branch visit.

I feel your pain. I had something similar during Covid when I was trying to make an investment and Lloyds bank fraud dept not only blocked it ( they said , incorrectly , it was a similar name to something that was dodgy ) , but unless I went to my nearest branch they would freeze all of my accounts and not allow me to use Internet banking. i've had fraud checks before and am grateful, but all have been done over the phone. When I tried to point out that the Country was under lockdown etc the person laughed and said it wasn’t their problem.
Round trip to nearest branch open ( 22 miles ) , picked the one day a “ roving manager “ was in, sorted it out within minutes and the very nice manager also phoned complaints for me and passed the phone over.
5 minutes later and sincere apologies and £ 75 for my trouble plus the promise that the individual would receive retraining or the sack !
Went to branch today shuts at 3...woops my mistake for not checking but always used to be 5.
Still don't understand what happens if you are abroad or physically unable to visit a branch in this scenario?
My app is blocked and assumrldy online is too. So card probably is too.luckily 0 impact on me other than the inconvenience in this investment and having to go to branch as have santander account as well since BC removed most of their Premier benefits but the principal is what has got my goat and the triumphant attitude of the fraud person
