An elderly {~93) neighbour of mine is concerned about one of her kids.

Recently he's shown an interest in her finances. He has a copy of her full share portfolio (which she admits she stupidly gave him a few weeks ago) and now this weekend he was after her NI number and DoB.

Naturally she simply replied that she can't recall her NI number and managed to avoid giving out her DoB (to her son and DiL)!!!!! Even the DiL said she'd pop upstairs to go through all her paperwork to see if she could find it. His excuse was that he was concerned she's paying too much tax. Although he knows she has an accountant where they meet and chat regularly.

Power of attorney is already in place (with her daughter), along with a current will and her share portfolio is locked down and secure with a well known/respected company.

Anyhow, she's now concerned what he's up to. Although he's not got those details, what could he do with them? I'm not sure he could do anything.

Anyone any thoughts what could be done with an NI number, DoB and of course name and address.

It does sound suspect, I would tell them she has sold the portfolio and given it all to charity to avoid care fees.

I can't help but feel the need to comment.

Even acting " legally " for someone whilst the NI number and Birth date are useful , it would take someone with the gift of the gab and a pretty useless person at the other end of the phone for the son to be able to persuade anyone to sell something.
As the daughter holds LPA and the portfolio is in one place ( not sure about Savings though ?) perhaps your neighbour should mention to the daughter who if worried could speak to the portfolio managers admin team to ensure no third party can ever access ?
I think the risk is pretty remote anyway but definitely sounds a tad suspect behaviour.
The DIL offering to look around sounds particularly off.
Perhaps your neighbour should just tell the son that for any more answer's speak to the daughter ?

Identity theft?

Presumably the PoA isn't registered yet.

Seems odd that her son doesn't already know her DoB.

Has your neighbour discussed this with her daughter?

Maybe he's a bit thick and doesn't realise it's the same as her birthday biggrin.

That really did make me chuckle. I might just suggest that to her biggrin

She said she was going to call them, along with her solicitor and accountant, just to ensure everything is still OK and ensure her various accounts security remains in place.

That was my initial suspicion; either that, or scamming a loan in her name or somesuch. I kinda then discounted that as I could not see a ~93 year old getting an approved loan. From what I can gather the PoA has been in place for a few years, but I don't have all the ins and outs. I did pop around to see her this evening (to help with some electrical things) but got no updates; so I'll leave it there.

I did setup a land registry alert against her address.

Thank you all again for inputs.
