Banks giving away money

I have a main business account and 2nd account with a few quid in just in case - belt and braces.
2nd bank sent an email yesterday saying if you spend £5 on your card we'll give you £10. Thought OK I was just about to order some printer ink so paid on that card thinking there must be some catch but no worries I needed the ink anyway. But no, they credited £10 to my account.
How can banks afford to give away money like this?
