Hi all,

Completed my self assessment a few weeks ago and thought it was okay but a colleague asked me a question and now I'm confused!

I'm part of a salary sacrifice scheme with Scottish Widows and a higher rate tax payer. 2023-2024 income of £115k and bonus of £50k in March 2024. I didn't sacrifice any of the bonus as I needed the cash for a house project. Otherwise contribute 10% which is matched by my employer.

Do I need to claim any tax relief for pension contributions or is all of this allowed for at source due to it being a salary sacrifice scheme?

Thank you!!

If it’s sacrificed pre tax on your payslip then you wouldn’t claim any relief on SA.

I sacrifice monthly but sometimes will pension my bonus as well. I have done this pre tax through paye but it’s a faff and given the sensitivity of the amounts when HR claim they don’t understand it’s usually because they are not happy about the amounts rather than an inability to understand the mechanics…

If you're PAYE it should all be done at source.

I've used this calculator before and it's been accurate pretty much down the penny.
