Tax Year 2024/25
Completed / Submitted SA End of May

Their online calculation is saying I am owed over £3k - probably due to a large one off payment into my SIPP. (high rate tax payer).
Chased this up end of June and was told it could be End of September before I get this refund even though online it says 2-4 weeks

Today my online account (the same one that I use to submit my SA) sends me a message saying that I owe them just under £3k and that they have already started taking action by collecting the amount through my current salary. (Obviously through an emergency tax code).
To add insult to injury HMRC have already refunded the basic rate tax on my SIPP payment back in February so they were totally aware of that payment.

WTF!

Therefore I need help from the collective PH.
What is the right way to correct this mistake?
It would be nice to be able to speak to a human!

Quick Update
Looks like this is a simple assessment tax bill.
Why didnt they just check to see if the SA had been completed?

I remember really struggling with knowing whether I should do a tax return and then actually doing it for various reasons

I had a letter saying I needed to do it and a letter saying I didn’t t need to do it

I spend days trying to get help, getting cut off when it wasnt a straight forward yes no

It was costing me in time / energy

kwasi kwarteng Made a mistake on declaring stuff and on the news a team were sent in to help him resolve his issue

That really pissed me off

I am still getting conflicting letters

Finally got through to HMRC after 40 minute wait - not too bad and had a 10 minute chat.
The Emergency Tax code was set to start from next tax year not this so my pay won't be erroneously reduced.
Basically have to wait on my SA refund to come back to me then ring up Simple Assessment Division and say that the Self Assessment Division have done their processing and so your numbers are wrong.
May have to wait till the Autumn.
Will Update when that happens.
All seems Arse About Face!

The issues with HMRC are well documented and have been for some years. I am an accountant and deal with them almost daily.

It blows my mind how they are allowed to continue like this. Its incredible some of the issues.

You can often wait 12 months for a relatively straight forward case to be resolved, waiting 6 months+ for a reply to a single sheet of A4 letter. You often call and are on hold for 45 mins+ to then be told you are through to the wrong line, despite a different member of staff telling you to call that number! They also have a habit of putting you on hold then putting the phone down on you.

It is a crime we aren't allowed to 'shop elsewhere'. They are the judge, jury and executioner all in one.

As you can probably tell this is something I feel very strongly about biglaugh An issue I find is clients think sometimes that problems are my incompetence when it is HMRC doing what they do best. F**k up!

They are a disgrace. I am so worried about what life will be like when MTD kicks in, in less than a year from now.
