A question about how to claim back fuel mileage blah blah blah from Gov as my employer only pays 13p per mile:
- Driving my own car for business trip.
- Assume 10,000 mile per year business mileage
- Employer pays 13p per mile (diesel 2ltr)
- I'm on 40% income tax band
- Don't have any other tax related entanglement, just straightforward PAYE from full time employment.

My question is, to claim back some of the differences in fuel mileage (because employer does not pay the full 45p / mile), should I claim "tax relief" directly from gov website, or should I use "Self Assessment tax return"?

From what I gather, the deciding factor is "Did you claim over £2,500 in expenses for that year?" But what does that 'expense' include? Just the 13p x 10k mile = £1300 I get for fuel from employer? Or does that figure include other expenses like flights and hotels I already claim back from employer as and when they are incurred (most likely over £2500)?
