Hi all, I’m a basic rate tax payer. I withdrew £22k from my pension in the last tax year (24-25).

So I was expecting to pay 20% of the total as tax - £4500 - fine, no problem. But when I got it from my pension provider they’d taken well over £7k in tax. This all happened in the 24-25 tax year. I’m still not close to the next highest tax band. Going online to find out how to get the difference back, it said your tax position is reconciled after the end of the tax year. This then moved to June and then November.

I phoned them today and after a 54-minute wait the guy said my employer had not sent HMRC a P14 form without which my tax account can’t be reconciled for 24-25.

I then googled ‘P14 tax form’ and it said they were withdrawn in 2013 and employers use ‘RTI’ to keep HMRC in the loop re wages, allowances etc. So I rang HMRC back (late in the day) and after 73 minutes, got through then got cut off!

So to those in the know, was the guy right or should they have all the info - courtesy of RTI, to reconcile my account? I can’t face ringing them again just yet …

Cheers

I think you’ll need to complete a P55.

Thanks very much for this info Cabbage. I steeled myself to ring them again late afternoon and 59 minutes later, a lady on the other end began to sort it out - doing the P55 for me as we spoke. All is now sorted so many thanks …
