Your most absurd financial decision

When I look at my bank statement and it says RAC £50.70, I think, "That's not bad, roadside cover for less than a pound a week."

What I missed, until November of this year, is that I have been spending £50.70 a month, not a year for roadside cover and almost everything else they offer. I have no idea how long I've been doing it and I'm definitely not going to check. When I was working, it saved me a couple of times but I retired five years ago.

Why didn't I notice? How could I be so stupid?
Anyone else prepared to confess?
My dad used to say, "You have no respect for money."
Sorry, dad.

That’s good going!
I did something similar with an Audi extended warranty a few years ago. I’d forgotten about the first policy, and took out another. It was over a year before I realised I’d been paying £1200 per year instead of £600…
They refunded me the extra policy which was very nice of them.

That was nice of them. I can't imagine the RAC doing anything similar. I had the cover but was extraordinarily unlikely to use it. I guess it happens if you're really busy. There's only so many things you can keep an eye on, which is great for businesses. Stingebags like me are terrible for such business models.
FWIW as a small business owner who runs a couple of monthly memberships, I do keep an eye on subscribers and if I feel someone isn't getting vfm from my services, I'll send them a message to check they're happy to continue their membership. This is probably why my business isn't worth millions. There was one person who just didn't reply to my messages over the course of 3 months so I cancelled their sub and direct debit. They didn't response to that either so I guess they were too busy!

This is one of the side-effects of paying for every last cup of coffee on a debit card, which I'm defintiely guilty of.
Your bank statement (which used to get checked religiously, and have little more than cash withdrawals, a few cheques and the occasional DD) is now swamped with dozens of payments that you typically CBA to reconcile or even check.

Probably the fact that it took until I was 40 to start properly using a credit card and using my current account properly, I e. Reducing the balance to zero every month and shuffling money round savings and investments.
Probably cost me a couple of hundred grand over the last 25 years.

What level of RAC membership does £600 get you?
Everything, including air fresheners and disposable seat covers and floor mat covers
I made that up about the air fresheners etc. I had everything, I hope. I just didn't need it. But you see why I thought it was annual.
Moving to a house with a electric boiler, I let OH talk me into it
I knew it would be expensive
Electric bill in November £940
Heating on upstairs for 2 hours a day and UFH down for, December on Track to be £450
But still heart won over head. FML
Or - taking out a credit card when I was 18 to build a credit score, an of course then maxing it out and spending then next 5 years paying it back. Never again.

That's absolutely mental energy costs. Surely you could put heating oil tank/ boiler in for same as one years energy cost on leccy?I knew it would be expensive

Sadly we decided to rent this place between selling our last and buying the next, so might only be one expensive yearDon’t know why the landlord didn’t just go electric panel heaters or a ASHP

Haven't looked what RAC membership costs but that really does sound expensive.
Can you question it?
Kind of reminds me of those broadband contracts where you realise one day brand new customers are paying half what you are.
Huh. Not as much as I thought. Despite having:Can you question it?

Roadside, Recovery and At Home
24/7 roadside and home rescue
Unlimited tow anywhere in the UK
Plus a 20-mile taxi home
they were still keen to sell me more. I can only conclude that some people pay more than I do. Did. I cancelled my membership today by email and cancelled the Direct Debit.

Surely you're a perfect candidate for not only solar panels, but a massive FO battery.I knew it would be expensive
