The catalyst for this "rant" is an email tax demand of £6000 for tax year 24/25 from the "Simple Assessment Department".
This needs to be paid within 3 months and I have 60 days to object.

Last spring/summer I made a claim through my SA since I had made a payment to my SIPP. In between dealing with the reclaim I started to receive tax demands from the "Simple Assessment Department". This really confused the hell out of me. I spoke to them a couple of times and soon realised they hadn't a clue.

I eventually sorted out my SIPP payments by speaking to the "Technical Department" and I received a refund for 24/25 straight into my bank account.

Today over 6 months later these clowns have calculated 24/25 again and obviously have omitted my SIPP payments hence the tax demand.

What is the course of action.
Should I write to my MP?
I really have lost the will to live!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Not really sure what you think an MP will do- if you write to them the process they follow is for their office to write to the minister in charge of the department, that minister doesn't care about you, their office redirects it to somewhere in HMRC. Who will give some lines to take back to the minister's office which then responds to the MP.

Your MP is a glorified post box, you will waste 4ish weeks for that to happen. The response will be bland policy drivel.

I could believe you're frustrated, but have you actually complained to HMRC and asked them why you need to follow this route rather than conventional SA if you're seeking what amounts to a refund because of what sounds like SIPP contributions? Is their ask of £6k wrong? Your rant doesn't really make it clear beyond you've got a bill and you're not happy about it.

Or have you thought about engaging an accountant to do it for you?

Write an old-fashioned letter to HMRC and make sure you get proof of postage.

Maybe things have changed since my wife worked in various Civil Service departments, including HMRC, but in her day MP's enquiries were taken very seriously.

.
I had to contact HMRC a couple of weeks ago after they reduced wife's self-assessment repayment, and did it by web chat. Took a couple of attempts before it would let me in, then said I was 25th in the queue, but it went down quickly. All sorted, small refund due, and the money landed yesterday.

I've since found they may have been technically correct (it's to do with part year state pension) but they accepted what I said.
