Since moving into our house nearly 10 years ago we have been in receipt of letters from HMRC and various debt collection first chasing outstanding PAYE from a business previously registered at the address.
The business has updated its address at company house

I have spoken with HMRC several times to advise them that the business is no longer at this address. They have even verified on the phone with me that the business has updated its companies house location. I am aware that Co/House and HMRC address will not always be linked for genuine reasons. But HMRC seemed happy to amend their known address.

Every call ends with the promise that I will no longer receive mail, but after nearly 10 years and several promises we are still receiving letters and the occasional debt collector turning up at the door.

How do I get them to stop?

File a tax return showing that HMRC owes you money. You won't hear from them again.

Have you tried writing to HMRC and the debt collector? Phone calls with quickly-forgotten verbal promises can count for little I think, as you've shown.

Then when the DC turns up next time you show him a copy of the letter you wrote to his head office the year before and wish him a nice day.

Ask your MP to sort it out.
