Just been trying to pay Capital Gains tax on a property sold a couple of weeks ago.

The Property was owned 50/50 with my wife, so we each need to submit our own liability and pay online. Easy Peasy?

Well mine was. Created a CGT account using my Government Gateway and filled in the relevant details, submitted and paid. All done in 30 mins.

So my wife basically had to mirror this. created the CGT account with her government Gateway. Filled in the form and submitted. She then gets the error - 'There has been an error with the service'.

Now she can't log in to the CGT account, just gets the same error. She can log in to her normal tax account with the government gateway, but the CGT account is just locked out.

How the hell do you get round this, bearing in mind there doesn't seem to be any way of getting in touch with HMRC? any pointers greatly appreciated.

For stuff like this I sometimes find that waiting 24 hours and trying again can fix it.

Another suggestion is to use a different web browser such as Opera instead of Chrome to eliminate the possibility of bad cached data.

Yeah I’ll try leaving it until tomorrow evening.

I’ve cleared the cache, used a private window, and even tried logging in on an iPhone and a Windows laptop. So not a bad cache unfortunately.

If it won't work, try setting up a new one. It doesn't matter if the old one is left empty. HMRC's systems are a complete mess.
