After years of PAYE i need to SA due to letting one of my properties. what is the view: get an accountant to do it the first time for me or plug through it myself?

Accountant without a doubt.

If it's just one property, and you are on top of all the costs etc you can offset, and there's nothing complicated, I'd say do it yourself.

An accountant isn't necessary - but might be helpful.

Just make sure that you know and understand what types of expenditure can be legally offset against your rental income.
