Sorry if this is a retarded question - never had to do it before.

I had a warranty repair job done on my car, the type that you have the repair done, pay it yourself then claim it back and they pay you by cheque.

Can you pay cheques (in my name) directly in to Barclaycard over the counter at a branch of Barclays, or will I need to go through the rigmarole of paying into my bank, waiting for it to clear then ebanking it as usual?

The money has to go to the payee (you). We can't 'cross cheques' in this conunty, that's why they all have 'account payee' written on them. The credit account is the bank's debt, you owe them.

Rigmarole unfort.

You can. I regularly post several cheques that are payable to me to Barclaycard. Recently I bought 4 tickets for myself & friends, the other 3 all paid me back via cheque. I then posted 4 cheques to Barclaycard & a payment slip ~ no problems.
