Having spent a demoralizing day reviewing my savings I have decided that there is little point in retaining the cash ISA as it is paying such a poor rate of interest.

Therefore, I'm considering moving c.£10k into a S&S ISA for a better return whilst retaining a degree of security. Researching myself but would welcome any suggestions?

Usual questions apply:

Over what timeframe can you invest?
Do you need income?
What is the most you can afford to lose?
etc

Sorry, should have thought.....

4-5 years
No income required
Hard question as it's difficult to quantify how much I'm prepared to lose. I appreciate that I have to accept some degree of risk for better than bank rate growth.

there is no answer to this question. Look at what would have been seen safe five years ago e.g. banks; property companies and look at them today.

Japan has done well in the recent short term; commodities have head a great run; small caps were one of the best performing fund sectors of the last 12 months. But who knows what they will have done by 2016

What rate are you getting? With tax year end coming up there'll be plenty of deals cropping up offering ~3% fixed.

If you do chose to invest in a S&S ISA, remember to do it as a transfer in order to maintain the ISA wrapper on the monies.

As for which fund - what's your attitude to risk, would you say you're cautious, balanced or adventurous?
