Been with the same Insurance broker (NFU)for eight years now, always found them O.K. to deal with and reasonable policy costs. Today received the renewal notice and astounded to see that the premium has risen by about 28% on last years premium. I have not claimed on the policy, checked the Company had not made an error, it hadn't. Simply the Underwriters pot of cash is running low due to the high number of expensive claims has forced the premium hike.
I am shopping around for an alternative but these are thin on the ground as the house has a thatched roof. Anyone else been clobbered with hikes such as these.

Check out Quidco to see if any of the insurers have cashback there, although there aren't any offering more than £45 right now. I think Hiscox used to be on there but it seems not :/ Make sure you clear your cookies right before logging into their site and clicking through to buy.

I have found the worst thing to do is stay with one insurer over the years as that is where they make their money (from a friend in the business, offer the low price first then steadily increase it and most don't notice).

I have gone from just over £400 for a years cover 4 years ago to £210 and managed to get all my camera gear (£6k's worth) covered for theft and accidental damage outside the home and in Europe for that as well.

It always pays to shop around.

Just had my renewal notice come through for the Motorhome, from going on compare sites, got renewal down from £257 to £220 but with much more cover, same cover was being quoted £184.

So every time shop around.

Thanks Batmannia for offer, and others for input. I have now shopped around and found a Company which will offer the same quality of insurance cover for a much lower premium. So my previous insurer offered a policy for £626 down to 467, a very large saving indeed. I stuck with my previous insurer as they offered a loyalty discount and a no claim discount, for which I have maximum years, obviously simply another little ploy to stop shoppers shopping around. Thanks again.
