It was included in the 2009 Budget but not implemented for tax years 2008/09 or 2009/10. It will effect the submission of the 2010/11 tax returns if they miss their January 2012 filing deadline.

Even though I curse the 31 January deadline every year, perhaps people should start considering their tax returns a bit earlier.

The original rule was that you only had to pay the £100 penalty if the return was late AND you hadn't any tax to pay at 31 January.

Now you will get the penalty even if you don't owe any tax. Indeed, you will be fined even if they owe you a tax refund.

Pragmatically, you have what, 9 months to get the return done ? Should be more than enough time to get it sorted

doesn't stop me doing it on the 30th Jan thoughhehe

In my view people should be fined not £100 but more like £1000 if they cannot be bothered to submit a self assessment form within the allowable 10 months...how much time do you need for Christ sake? I have reasonably complex personal tax issues involving foreign earnings etc and its a real chore to do but I accept my responsibility and JFDI. Why should I slave away to comply when others take the p**s?

Now, if there was an incentive to people to submit their self assessment well ahead of the deadline and then get a tax reduction, that would be the best way, and I'm willing to bet we'd have a much higher time compliance rate.

In 10 days or so I, like millions of others, will hear the thud on the doormat of the self assessment package for 2010/11. I am pleased, indeed a tad smug too, that I already have 90% of the required financial data sorted out, and I'll probably settle down with a large Scotch some time in July to get the task done, as in previous years.

Of course, I accept that some people just cannot be bothered and that's fine by me, but I think don't feel you have the right to moan about the very well publicised implications if you take that view.

R.
