I have a feeling that this is a long shot, but I was wondering if there was a chance I'd be able to get a tax rebate before the end of the tax year? I would like to top up an ISA.

Situation is:

I started work in June of last year, and have been on the BR tax code ever since.

I've therefore not had my tax free allowance, so will be due a rebate of ~£1,200.

I'm paid weekly through PAYE, and will be in the same job for the next tax year (I hope!), so do I need to make a claim, or will it magically adjust itself through my pay for the last week of this tax year?

Any advice appreciated, never had to do much with tax before!

Nope.

Quickest way to get a refund would be to do a self assessment and file online.

Why were you on BR and why couldn't it have been sorted outr earlier in the year?

If you can get your code sorted in time for the final payroll run for the year (i.e. month ended 31 March 2011), you would get your overpaid PAYE back instanyly though your net wages without any comntact necessary with HMRC). However, it is probably too late for that now and you will probably have to make a separate claim for a refund of the over[paid tax.

If you are not careful, HMRC could try to give you your refund by adjusting your 2011/12 coding which means that the refund would be spread over the next 12 months - which I am sure you don't want.

Bah not looking good then!

Not sure why I've been on BR all year, never really thought about it until now. D'oh!

I'll give the tax office a ring tomorrow and see what they say.

If I got it back through my wages would it be capped to my gross pay per week? My weekly gross won't be enough to cover the rebate. I must be the lowest earner on here!
