So in August it was agreed that Santander would buy all RBS branches in England & Wales, and all Natwest branches in Scotland.

As someone who has had a few bad experiences with Santander in the past (their customer services stink and are regularly placed at the bottom of most uk banking surveys) I'd rather stay where I am. Never had any complaints about RBS.

As I understand, those in positions like myself have 3 options:

1 - Just move over to Santander.
2 - Ask for a branch transfer form and move your account to a branch in Scotland. This would leave you with no branch to visit though in case you want to deposit/withdraw large amounts of cash, bank a cheque etc.
3 -Move your account to NATWEST who use the same systems as RBS and have more or less identical products

I'm leaning towards option 2 and will probably open another account at HBOS, HSBC or likewise as a backup.

Anyone else making plans or am I just worrying about something insignificant?

Yes, I am in the same position, I moved my account to RBS about a day before the sale was announced! Not amused!

When the time comes, I'll leave the Santander account and open another onw with someone else.

Why bother, I have used RBS for about 15 months now, and apart from the odd time I am in the city the account was opened in, I use my local Natwest. Same service, different colours. They try the old 'it won't be processed for a day sir' to start off with, when you let your BizMngr know, they soon give them a boot and tell them to get on with it.

I understood at the time (and just checked - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance...

That the RBS account will now be transferred to Santander so if he doesn't want to use Santander he will have to move to Natwest somewhere ine England.

He cannot just use a Natwest account from now on because he won't have an RBS/Natwest account.

Unless I have misread the article.

Way back in 1983 I was a Williams and Glynns customer - got taken over by RBS. No real change, same branch, same faces etc.
I've noticed a small change this last year. Interest paying current account now a current acount ( zero interest) - only one teller on at a time...lots more queue-ing time.

So the transition happens this year. In the first half of the year your telephone and internet banking will change then in q3 everything changes.

From the people I've spoken to, should you wish to stay with rbs then call 0800 210 0214 and ask for a 'branch transfer form'. They then transfer you to a branch in Scotland.

It still leaves you with the problem of 'who do I go and see if there is a problem'? Because of course there will be no rbs branches in England. As far as I understand 'the natwest' will be allowed to deal with your account (at least for deposits and withdrawals).
