P800 and tax demand
Discussion
Hi all,
quick question about a P800 Tax Calculation that the tax man has sent me today.
Is it a safe assumption of mine that the figures shown on the P800 for income and tax paid should be equal to the numbers of the P60s I have for the corresponding years? I would have thought they should be identical.
thanks

Are they that wildly different?
Which seems to ne the more correct? The P60 or the P800?
The P800 aims to collate all your taxable income from all sources and work out the correct Income Tax due based on the total taxable income.
If the P800 shows a much lower tax amount arising than what was shown on the P60, that might indicate that your employer taxed you excessively during the tax year.
If that is indeed the case, then the P800 should show that you overpaid tax for that tax year and you should be due a tax refund. HMRC may give you the "refund" in the form of an adjusted Tax coding for the following tax year, which you may not want.
If you would prefer a proper refund, phone them and tell them that is what you want. There should be a contact phone number on the P800.

Thanks Eric, they are widely different, but the p60 totals are the same as my payslips.
The tax paid is much higher on my p60 than is shown on the p800, hence quite a large underpayment being calculated by HRMC.
I have been trying to speak to them on the phone but cannot get through, guess I am one of many trying to speak to them

If the P60 shows MORE tax than the P800, then you have orobably OVERPAID tax, not underpaid. The tax paid is much higher on my p60 than is shown on the p800, hence quite a large underpayment being calculated by HRMC.

You would expect the P60 to agree with the payslips. The P60 is only a summary statement of what your employer has paid to you during the year and the tax he has deducted. This would already have been shown on a month by month basis on each payslip.
To close the story, I eventually got to speak to somebody at HMRC. They agreed that the two sets of data dont join up so it has been referred to the "service team" for investigation.
Seems this will take 3 - 4 weeks due to high volumes of questions and they will then 'correspond' with me.
Thanks
