Large Day-room questions...
Discussion
Hi all!
We are currently doing an extension on the rear of our 1930's 3-bed detached house. Nothing too original - we are knocking the galley kitchen into the dinning room and going out four meters from the rear of the house. Putting in a large set of doors and creating a mahoosive kitchen / day room. Now, I am having to consider lighting etc and have started to put the attached visual together which I would love your comments on. The kitchen (see visuals) is going to be on the far right with a central island, and three round ball lights hanging over the top of it. The rest of the room I was going to light with small counter sunk spots? The shape over the sofas is a large 1.5x3m light lantern, and to the left of the sofas is going to be a plasma TV. The doors at the top will be 5.75m wide...

I hate downlighters outside of work areas, ie the kitchen, as the light is harsh IMO.
Why not get a 5 amp lighting circuit put in? That way you can turn on a load of side lights from a wall switch.
I've also discovered that fixed spots in a kitchen can be a pain, particularly if they're set back from the worksurface like you're planning. They cast a shadow just where you don't need it as they're behind you when you're chopping stuff so it's harder to see exactly where your fingers and the knife are
I'd go for a track system above the work surface. It won't be as tidy but it'll be a hell of a lot more practical.

we did something similar although not as big as your room is going to be, used that GET wirless lighting system which has little remote that can dim zones down and up etc, really good, we very rarley have all the downlighters on btu there there if you need kind of thing, plus we have a hanging light over the table, plsu more hanging over the breakfast bar plus the light in the extractor fan.
