Proper tile paint can look brilliant when you first do it, if you do a good job of it.

It doesn't last, though, and then it looks awful.

Definitely tacky! Unless you mask off the grout then it'll look fine!

What makes you say it would be tacky? Unless you mean it in a literall sense and things will stick to the tiles...

Tacky - it will look cheap and nasty as if someone got a tin of paint and painted over the tiles. If you can't do the job properly by retiling, don't do it.

Plus, how the Hell do you really clean a painted surface which gets splashed with water, soap, piss etc - answer, you can't.

OK, tiles are an ideal surface for cleanliness. They are hard, glossy and easy to clean, they create an air of cleanliness when they are shiny and fresh. Now put paint over the top, even the very best paint and it wont be as shiny, clean and the grout lines will disappear making it obvious.

In short it will look well st innit!

Proper tile paint does give a fairly convincing impression of being shiny ceramic glaze.

Until it gets chipped.

What about the grout though?

You have to mask it.

I wouldn't recommend it, though, not unless it's an area which isn't subject to wear and tear and a need for frequent cleaning. If it is in (for instance) a shower cubicle, and it gets chipped/scratched, water can get under it and it comes away from the tiles in big bubbles.
