Hi

We have beech worktops in our kitchen, which are very high maintenance.

As they are 27mm deep, and so standard replacement 30mm Granite worktops will not fit under the tiling

I've found a company that will make engineered granite coverings for existing worktops - does anyone have any experiences with this type of thing?

I did this on my last kitchen, basically 10mm Granite that 'siliconed' onto waterproof MDF worktop. We went to see it at a factory in Birmingham & they delivered to us for DIY install. It was OK but a pain to fit as I had to cut it in a few places. H&S would have had a seizure. I opted for a high gloss granite, which was a mistake. Showed every mark worse than glass. It looked nice though & lasted about 10 years. I have just ripped it out & now have solid Quartz at vast cost...

I would and did fit granite tops, very nice when done properly, I wouldn't personally use coverings. Remove and replace the old tiles would be my advice, new tops with old tiles isn't half as nice as new tops new tiles and grout. It doesn't need to be expensive either.

Better still, get rid of the tiles, repair the wall, then fit granite tops with matching granite upstands. Very tasteful and stylish. I don't know if they cover your area but the guy to speak to about granite is Kwacker

Maybe they can supply solid granite with a rebate at the back for the tiles?

Not thought of that - might be worth an ask - thanks for the idea

Probably easier to cut the tiles, diamond disc in an angle grinder, steady hand or a guiding batten.

Why compromise on £1K's of granite to fit in with £100 of tiles? Go to cargo granite in Bedford, great customer service and competitive pricing, remove the bottom row of tiles and get them to make an upstand that fills the gap.

He has a point. Presumably the tiles you have went with the beech worktop. Change the beech to granite and they might not only look 'wrong' but you'll have half a new kitchen with half an old kitchen spoiling it. So unless cash is tight you might consider choosing a wall covering that goes with the new granite.

if your tiles mean so much to you,why dont you butt up to tiles then put in a
granite upstand to tidy things up..
30mm is the only way to go really..
