Hello

I had these fitted and am looking to treat them with a woodstain or Varnish.

http://www.savoydoors.co.uk/Interior-French-Doors/...

Any advice welcome to obtain the best finish - I understand that the doors are oak and the other parts are oak veneer.

So, varnish or wood stain, thats the question!?

If you like wood, stay with varnish (can be matt, satin or gloss) or oil or even wax.

Stain is for outdoor stuff and if you don't like wood, IMHO.

Interesting!

Maybe Varnish it is then!

I'm quite impressed with the Sikkens Cetol range of finishes though only used it for exterior use.

If you've got these indoors where weathering's not an issue, maybe just a light clear matt varnish? Ronseal's OK.

I've used this stuff many times on a variety of woods (iroko worktops, oak handrails, pine doors and floors) with excellent results..

I really dislike varnishes for the reason that they tend to seal wood which won't allow it to breathe (though you should never varnish/paint the top and bottom edges for this reason) and will have a lower tactile pleasure. 2 coats will be enough and really bring the colour out. Mask all the glass areas for a better job.

Interesting...the world has changed - it appears you can do things properply with many stages or just one coloured varnish stage....

I am slightly confused - what will give me the best finish?

There are two choices - I can buy 'Wood dye' - the doors are light oak, I want dark oak - so I could use a wood dye

http://www.wickes.co.uk/wood-dye/invt/170545/

and then varnish with 'clear varnish'

http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servle...

OR

I can go straight to the varnish stage with 'dark oak' interior varnish...

Thanks!

I may look into this depending upon what I decide.

I want to stain the wood first, that is my first port of call.

We used Danish oil on something very similar - it's surprising how much darker the colour becomes after treatment.

I also used Danish oil on my new interior doors, then finished them with a light coat of clear wax applied with wire wool. This has left a nice satin finish with a silky feel. There were other 'colours' available for the oil which will darken the doors more as the 'clear' one I used just made the oak as dark as a damp cloth wiped on it (in an inconspicuous place of course) to test.

Is dark wood back in then? I've just about finished doing my house with light oak flooring, doors and some furniture, so I guess it's a sure fire guarentee that it's now out of date. smile Thankfully I like it regardless and it's time to work on the car not the house for a change anyway. smile

Sikkens do a clear internal microporous "paint".

I wouldn't use anything other than Sikkens, and we sell Ronseal!

Danish oil every time. Looks beautiful on oak, keeps the fine texture, goes on perfectly and leaves you with a smooth, resistant surface with a nice lustre.

I'd strongly advise you to try it natural to start with - you can always darken later!

Do you believe it stains quite dark already?

If it helps, the complementing furniture is similar to the link:

Hence why I am wanting a dark colour!

I'd leave the doors light(er). They'll seriously darken the room otherwise, and it's not the end of the world if they don't match your furniture.

8th row down shows the tone our doors/stairs went with 2 coats of Danish, if that helps.

That's a great looking place Bonefish. I don't know who finished their kitchen first in the end (we seemed to be working in parallel last year), if yours looks like the rest of the house I bet you're happy. I'm just glad to be at the end of my more humble '10 year make over' and now have time for other things...including cars. thumbup
