Fancy picking myself up one of these units, sounds quite good to be able to just chuck waste and leftovers into the sink and let the unit chop it all up rather than waiting a fortnight for the bins to stink and grow some new form of fungi within.

B&Q are selling a mid-spec unit (the 55) for £150, I'm thinking of getting it if it all checks out well. If you've got one, what are your opinions? Worth the money? Easy to install? Robust?

TIA.

There is one in my Grandparents house. I can't tell you anything about installation as it was put in with the new kitchen but I can tell you that it is a pretty cool thing to have.

Grinds stuff up good.

We've got a basic one, replaced it last year as we were re-doing the waste pipes and it was efficient on the labour to do so. The previous one had been in place for 28 years and was working fine. Well worth having.

Cheaper on Amazon normally though.

I don't have one, but have installed a few.

They are fairly easy to install. You'll most likely need to alter the waste pipes, but thats fairly easy to do. You'll need to fit a new waste connector to the sink as well, but again, that is a very easy job to do.

Just be careful what goes down them, I've seen them jammed up by little pieces of glass and hair clips.

They are not the nicest things to try and dismantle!

Very robust, ours has taken all we throw at it for the past 10 years. Just make sure you flush enough water through while and after operating it. The output gunge needs to be flushed through or it could potentially block the U bend.

Thanks for the replies. Went out earlier this morning and picked it up from B&Q, now I've just got to figure out how to install it.

I got one of these, my only advice is careful of teaspoons getting in there. Mines trashed several. They're also difficult to clean.

Periodically I shove a load of ice cubes through mine. Cleans them a treat.

Sounds like something that Dr Doofensmirtz would use to take over "the whole of the Tri State Area".

My in-laws had one and their waste pipe layout was tortuous and got blocked quite a bit. So make sure the the runs aren't complicated and also don't box stuff in or hide it such that dis-assembly would be very difficult. It also needs copious hot water with anything greasy.

I hummed and harred about it on our last kitchen refit but was somewhat scarred by the in-laws experience. Also we still have weekly waste collections and my missus tends more to convenience - vegetables in a bag from M&S etc, than doing stuff totally from scratch, so we don't have enormous amounts of food waste.

Couldn't agree more with your first statement. I have on where the sink is on an external wall with simple pipework leading directly outside. It never blocks even using minimal water. I also have one mounted inside an island unit that is an absolute bh for blocking.
