So after just 4 years my rubbish Q&B purchased, Chinese made Mountfield SP474 has packed up. It looks like most their sub £200 models are now Chinese made with the Honda engined models now over £300.

I'm looking for a petrol mower, self propelled if possible, for under £200. Are there any alternatives that will last over 5 years?

I doubt it. Bite the bullet and get a Honda Izy.

I just bought a John Deere Mulcher! its an amazing piece of machinery! no collection required but you can buy the collector box if you want to collect... not quite £200 though, im sure you could find a deal on one somewhere.....

Look here! someone flogging a used one on ebay.....

Sorry for the thread HJ but our gardener is becoming unreliable and Mrs Manks has got some of her chums coming over with kids tomorrow so I too need a mower in case we lose any of the little blighters in the shaggy lawn.

I'd guess we have about 0.1 acres of lawn. If we bought a Honda Izy how big do we need? Would this do? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Honda-HRG415PD-16-inch-Whe...

Depends how long you want to spend mowing, 21" would be better, but then it depends how much money you want to lay out.

Possibly the Honda legend is a bit over-stated. Toro seem pretty good and a few local grass cutting businesses use nothing else. Pricey though.

Toro make commercial mowers as well as domestic.

I'd recommend Hayter too, but seem to recall ours wasn't £200 either!

If you can bump your budget to £260 you can get a Viking (an offshoot of Stihl) mower, I got one not long back and its been a good little worker. I've had Hayters in the past and they've been great, but there a bit dear to buy new these days.
