Ideas for garage please, including flat roof repair.
Discussion
I have a week off coming up soon and plan to do out my garage in that time. Money is tight, so please bear this in mind!
Here it is.....

and again with the car in, for idea of scale....

The plan is to dispose of most of the clutter and keep just the tools. I want to rip out the bench and units on the wall.
I want to rebuild the bench, but not the full width, I want the tool chest to fit in the gap I leave.
I'll probably fit a few wall mounted shelves and some tool boards.
I then want to paint the wall and floors and fit some extra lighting to walls.
Questions...
What material would you recommend as a worktop for the bench? Needs to take a hammering. I'm thinking anything metallic will be too expensive, some sort of thick ply perhaps?
What types of paint should I use and what colours would you recommend?
How do I get rid of that oil stain on the floor?
What lights would recommend? I'm planning on wall mounting four lights on the side wall as it is pretty dark in their with one roof mounted light.
Also.....

How do I repair this? The felt has come away on the face of the garage and the water and Ivy (I think) is getting in.
Can I repair it in this manner...

By cutting layers of felt and lapping it over? What adhesive/sealer do I need?
I'd be interested to hear peoples ideas for the garage and any pointers.
Information on the roof repair would be great!
Sorry for the long winded post!

Hi there.
I've got some normal kitchen worktop (cheapo white stuff from B&Q etc) supported by some framework made up of 2x2 softwood legs with front-rear timbers and also cross rails along the whole length, all securely fixed to the side and rear walls and floor. This supports a 6" vice quite well. What you could do with limited space is a short fixed bench for heavy-duty work and a vice, then a folding bench that hinges to the wall for more occasional use. I would also do high-level 6" wide shelves along the rear and side walls and perhaps narrower shelves further down. This should store most of the crap safely out of the way. I've also got chipboard (or OSB) tool boards an the rear wall which is spaces off the wall by 1" with 2x1 softwood to prevent damp ingress. Walls can be painted with white emulsion. Nice Beetle by the way

The best stuff for getting the oil off the floor is Traffic Film Remover buy the concentrated stuff use it neat and you will be shocked what it will remove.
You can get two part epoxy floor paint which is meant to be the proper stuff but really for DIY garage type work / abuse I have just stuck to the stuff I got from B&Q went for red for the floor and white walls. It dose brighten the place up quite a bit. I have only had to touch up the floor once in 7 years.
Second vote for the cheap white kitchen work top also got a nice big vice on this and it has not broken yet I used 2x4 under it and reinforced the front edge with a strip of 2x4.
Good Luck and have fun it will look 100x better once you have finished.

pint the walls with a couple of coats of white emulsion, instead of painting the floor, just use floor sealer, its a clear solution that doesnt peel or chip off like paint will. you could in fact use a weak pva mix to do the job.
re the roof, get a tub of roof felt adhesive, and a small roll of capsheet. spread adhesive where required, stick on patches (or a run) of new capsheet. press firmly into place job done.
lighting, just use 2 5ft fluorescents mounted from the ceiling
bench, cheap worktop- see if you can buy a DAMAGED length from howdens or magnets ( maybe even b+q /wickes)that way it will be about a third of the cost. sit it on a frame of either 2x2 or stud timber all screwed together.
Vice, this is mandatory and you will need to bolt the biggest vice you can find to the bench. ideally a 6" vice.
see if you can get hold of a couple of good used kitchen wall uinits, i.e: ex display
look on freecycle to aid you in your quest.....
how long a piece of w/top you need?

I think I need to pull the batten and fascia board off as the ivy has dislodged it.
Can I just lap some felt over and stick it down with the adhesive you've mentioned?
Thanks.
Don't you know a roofer you could swop some time with? Flat roofing is a nightmare if it's not done right. Can I just lap some felt over and stick it down with the adhesive you've mentioned?
Thanks.
Had no money spare this week, but when cleaning through all the crap some Masonry paint and a big drum of floor paint!
So I've had a bash at it, the old bench is staying for now! Going to sand it all down and give it some paint.
I've painted half of the garage, but ran out. So I started on the floor.
Tomorrow I'll move the stuff to the other side and finish it. I need to hurry, the Beetle is disintegrating in the rain!
So far....

I re roofed my parents garage a few years back, had never done it before. They had been quoted 700/800 to do the job.
I bought all the materials from b&q (in hindsight not the cheapest place).
Ripped off all the old felt and repaired some rotten timbers, put down a layer of felt underlay, then covered from front to back with roofing felt using the cold felt adhesive stuff, finally did the edges (after finding some instructions on the web on how to get a neat finish. Then covered in gravel.
Took me 2 and a half days and cost about 170 quid, no leaks on signs of any issues since.
