We had a well known national conservatory installer round this afternoon to thrash some ideas out of what we require and get a quote yet again. Now i believe ive got a half decent deal but was wondering if me and the mrs had got rose tinted glasses on again?
We have been quoted for a 3m deep by 5 meter wide conservatory. Full brick gable end one side, floor to ceiling glass across the front and other side with double doors and one side door. An internal stud wall fitted with door to create a utility room seperate of the living space. 3 sets of double electric sockets. All walls plastered and skirting fitted. The roof is the best glass gas filled solar roof they do also and all ground works planning, regs etc.
After thrashing out a few details and pricing managed to get the final quote for 15k. A considerable amount off the starting price but are we still looking good or have i been seen coming?

I'm not an expert, but assuming you are happy with the quality of the materials, the glass, fittings etc. then I think the price you've got there sounds very reasonable. You don't want to pay a bargain basement price for a shoddy job, but clearly nor do you want to pay over the odds.
I would get a couple of local references and either speak to them or - better - go see them and check out their experience of the builders, the quality of the workmanship and overall level of satisfaction. If the company is reputable ans is operating locally then they should be happy to oblige.

SJC i agree totally with you and this is why i was asking the question perhaps from more experienced people or even people in the trade. I tried lots of local companys as i like to support local businesses but very few wanted to take the time to even show me their products before i had a price. Some did take the time and came back with quotes of 10k for a 3 x 4.5, dwarf walls same amount of doors and a poly roof which i felt was ok but still wasn't eaxctly what i wanted. They are so noisy when it rains and i want to be able to use it a much as possible.
Homeimprovements i live in March in cambs and i'd be happy to send you a drawing and spec list when i recieve it for you to give me and honest opinion. Like stevem46 said i want a decent job but don't want to learn up the line when the work has been done that i've over paid by 3k. I really really had to push hard to get that price, my next move was to say we'll leave it when i put out a cheaky punt to round the figure down which was finally accepted. As someone else said the starting price was so far away to begin with the average joe really dosen't know how inflated it was.
Rover morris the roof system comes with a full length ventialtion system that works all time and the front comes with a ventilation system but can't remeber what it was called.
Instead of a concrete finished floor we opted for something we thought would be better and worked out cheaper, its a cork/chip board like materail that you lay your floor straight onto and its backed on a insulation typed base. Anyone seen or used this?

think it was 24k
If a company rep quoted me 24K, and then came down to 15K, i would be showing the phucker the door. Why deal with a company that initially tried to fleece you? They are dishonest.
Old folks, who don't understand the concept of haggling, are being fleeced of their war pensions. Not company's who i wish to deal with.
A couple of hundred pounds is acceptable, but 9 grand FFS!
Good luck.

They tried to have you over from the outset. When I got quotes for double glazing, some of the b
ds tried the same tactic. The firm that eventually got my business was the one that came out with a realistic price before any haggling took place. Good luck and I really hope they do a good job, but just remember they tried to rape you by initially asking for 24 big ones.

I can't stand this dishonesty in sales, it is possible to sell something and tell the truth!
