Strange landlord activity.....
Discussion
To cut a long story short and to save any questions:
Me & my partner have been renting our current apartment for just over 2 years now
Have a house going to exchange this week - with the aim to complete last week of June.
Thats not the strange bit...
A little over a week ago i had a couple of letters that at the time didnt really mean anything...
1) From a debt collection agency naming the previous tenant with a claim for unpaid "ground rent", phoned our letting agent explained it, said they'd deal with it, and then forgot about it.
2) A letter from our landlord, with a simple "to the occupier, our address", letter was short and to the point and said basically bank details have changed with immediate effect.... somewhere along the line the letter has been misplaced so prior to paying this months rent i contacted the letting agent to confirm bank details... they gave me the same details we have been using ever since day one.
Ok... so the scene has been set
Today, get in from work slightly earlier than normal, to find a letter from the new (past 4 months) property management company requesting a call.
Called them, and after much ducking and diving i basically asked them if the reason they were asking for contact details for our landlord was due to monies owed...suprise suprise it is. Theyve not received payment for their services (the lady on the phone couldnt confirm for how long, or how much...but our landlords own 7 properties within this development)
Basically it dawned on me then that we've left several messages on the varying phone numbers we have for our landlords, sent the odd email, and not had a response since prior to Xmas 2010....and to top it off the property management company have completely different contact details to us.
To make matters more strange our landlord has a UK registered address but apparently lives in Spain.
Waiting to speak to our letting agent tomorrow about it...but to me its looking a tad dodgy???

So..have you been paying rent to the letting agent? Or the landlord?
If you are moving out at the end of June (all being well) then is your principle concern your deposit, or is the letting agent obliged to return this to you?
I can see that this all looks a strange, but if you've rented through an agency then surely the risk is with the letting agent and not you?
Unless I've over-simplified, or mis-read what you've said....

Ok to further clarify rent is paid to a bank account that is registered to the landlord...
It is more than likely to be an error somewhere, but it does seem a tad strange.
All i want is my deposit, and if it turns out to be a bit wooly if i can get away without giving 4 weeks notice i'd be £700 better off
