The carpet fitter has left and you need to adjust the bottom of some doors.
You don't own a block plane so nip out to B&Q to get one.
Having taken your new purchase out of the box you admire your new tool and twirl the little wheel.
You then turn it over - oooh, shiny and smooth.

Now here's the thing..
Even as I started to do it my brain told me not too, but i just did it, like touching a hot plate you have been forewarned about...

Never, ever run your hand the wrong way along the nice smooth shiny bit.

If I save one other idiot, my work here on this post is done.

I believe he has, yes, but the only plane he has seen recently is the one that took him to Dubai for some somewhat fantastic adventures in the sun

Last time I sharpened a wood chisel on a grindstone I did the exact same thing.

I also made a good job of the sharpening it would seem. doh.

Ouch! Just be thankful it wasn't an electric planer.

I was going to suggest you need a circular saw for trimming doors, but on the other hand... maybe not! hehe

My dad, a veterinary surgeon of many years, so not a dim man, did this. With an electric plane.

When you leave your fingerprints on the bit, it's hot enough. It's made worse because you actually try to grab it, not just touch it. I know because I was about 14 and dabbling with electronics. My father came along and said 'That bit's too big, you need a smaller one...'

Sizzle.

The most annoying thing is when you are about to do something stupid, and the thought flashes through your mind 'If I do this it might burst/break/shatter/burn me' but you think 'No I'm sure it'll be alright'... and then two seconds later it bursts/breaks/shatters/burns you... banghead

Amateur, you want to try cleaning the face of an electric planer on your thigh whilst it's still running.
