When to buy firewood?

We had our stove installed late autumn last year, so didn't really have a choice.

Is it best to wait until we need the wood, or order now and let it dry out in certain conditions under our care?

Now is good. If you buy it when you need it, it'll be expensive. Simple supply and demand. Buy as much as you can.

always handy to find out if a neighbour is having trees down, and do a deal with the tree "surgeon".

I had a large Ash down recently, and my neighbours were most happy to pick up the wood.

If you have access to a van or truck and fancy a drive out to us (Just the other side of Slough) get in touch. I can sort you out with some logs F.O.C. I'll cut the logs up into split-able lengths for you with the saw.

Get it now & store somewhere that is protected from rain but gets fresh air to it. The through-draft of air will significantly help the drying of the logs.

Look at it this way - don't you wish you had bought a tanker load of petrol 5 years ago?

Ask around the area for who people use. We had a farmer who used to supply us, but let us down just before Christmas with stuff we couldn't burn. That's now drying out properly, but some friends put us on to another chap. He's expensive, but the wood is fab.

And that reminds me, I must stick an order in to him this week.

Don't forget you really need it to dry for at least a year. Most 'seasoned' wood you buy isn't. So get as much as you can store.
