Has anybody done this before, and lived to post about it?

I want to cut a hole top and bottom out of one, but I'm also quite fond of my face.

Any advice?

Just take an angle grinder to it. I mean, what's the worst that could happen? biggrin

I don't see any problem as long as it's empty and depressurised.

If the valve is off, just fill it with water to force out any remaining gas, empty and get stuck in with the cutting disc...!

For a more spectacular cut, rinse with unleaded, not water. smile

Knock the top off it and make sure you have got all of the gas out. You can do this by lighting it if you are brave enough, but I would only recommend doing this when you know it is nearly empty. When the bottle is empty you can cut it with a grinder of oxy torch. We make wood burning stoves out of them smile

Do not follow this advice, although rare it is totally possible in that situation for the remaining gas and air to mix into an explosive combination (the pilot light on top manages to pull air in while purging gas apparently!!) and et voila no more gas bottle! Maybe face too!

I am really surprised by the replies here.

I'm no wimp, I've had my fair share of run-ins with dodgy ideas...

But my advice is

DO NOT DO THIS

It is properly, properly dangerous.

I really really advise you not to do this.

I would use 112 so they can locate you quicker. When you can't speak because you have no face, this may come in handy hehe

before nuclear bombs were invented the americans were considering parachuting prisoners with gas bottles and hacksaws into enemy towns.

They could also use microwave cheese toasties as a budget alternative to napalm.

I would say that if you fill with water you'll be fine! It is what we used to do if we needed to weld a fuel tank!

I'd have them a little closer so that you have company down at A&E smile

Joking aside, I have seen a friend cut a gas bottle with an oxy torch and he had no problems. I didn't see what he did beforehand but would like to think he made sure it was safe! I on the other hand wouldn't cut a bottle with a torch, but as I have a friend who does, I'd just ask him smile
