Over the past few weeks the glasses coming out of the dishwasher have been cloudy. This has gradually been getting worse.

It seems most people say it is due to mineral build up from hard water, however this is the same water source for 3 years.

I have tried a dishwasher 'bomb' to clean, however this didn't change the outcome of the cloudy glasses.

If someone knows what specifically causes the 'cloudy' and what can be done to help it.

I think it has run out of salt.

Is everything cloudy?
Do you wear glasses yourself?

No, this gets checked regularly and has plenty in.

Whoa, spooky, I had exactly this conversation with the GF not 15 minutes ago!

We've got cloudy glasses too...

Topped up the salt (dont think it was low though, the machine normally tells me), and the machine is only 3 months old anyway so probably not long term build up of stuff either.

We use the all in one tablets (pouch thingies with liquid and powder in them) so have never used the finishing agent in this machine.

I also cleaned all the filters etc, just in case it was a film of goop being left behind from dirty water. They were pretty minging to be fair.

20 mins and I'll see the results!

ah the fun I have on a saturday afternoon!

We use the finish all in one tablets.

I think the same things are going on in my house IE OH telling me to fix things.

Whenever I add rinse aid to my machine the next one or two washes come out cloudy. Overfilling the reservoir can cause the clouding.

Ah maybe this is the issue, as I keep it topped up. I will try to run it out and see.

We have very soft water so don't use salt and we don't use rinse-aid either, using all-in-one tablets.

I'd never put lead crystal in the dishwasher, but with plain drinking glasses, glasses from some sets go cloudy and apparently similar glasses from other sets don't. I've always assumed it something to do with the type of glass used. I wouldn't say ours were cloudy anyway, it's more a swirly pattern etched into the glass.

My step-mums glasses do that, is the glasses as opposed to the washer. The glasses arent dishwasher safe.

Whenever glasses come out cloudy it's worth taking a close look at the plates and cuttlery. If it's a machine issue, rather than the type of glass, those other items will probably have a cloudy film on them too although not very obvious from a casual glance.

It's glass corrosion, its not reversible.

I vote for the glasses too. The glass washer at work is pimpin' but the glasses are not, they come out swirly and I spend most of my time behind the bar polishing the fkers.

If it's a chemical reaction between the dishwasher agent and the glass it will take some time to appear and gradually get worse. This sounds more like a problem with lack of dishwasher salt or finishing agent.

We have very hard water, and started to get this problem recently, solved it by changing from Dishwasher salt to Salt Tablets.

Dont know why it worked but it does

Its actually the type of detergent you use.

Powder and solid tablets will cause the scratching as they are abrasive.

Use liquid.

Also, cheap glass doesnt help.

Can you program the dishwasher to use the correct salt for your water hardness? That's a problem we had with our new one for a week or so but then worked out how to tell it we have harder water, it started using the right amount of salt, and the glasses don't cloud anymore.

its the glass not the dishwasher. there is a cure though. soaking the glass in malt vinigar for 3-4 weeks reverses the clouding of glass. works especially well on lead cur crystal.

Soaking in vinegar will remove limescale, but it won't reverse etching.
