Agent tenant fees

Good lord, my first time renting and I'm shocked how much letting agents charge new tenants for 'referencing and paperwork' £150+ seems the norm. Scandalous.

It seems there's no choice but to pay up. The small letting agency I let my own property out with doesn't charge.
