Now I guess there is regional variation in this (I'm in London) but would anyone be horrified by a quote of £1,300 for two rooms to be painted:

Bedroom. 12'6x15'6, ceiling height 8'6, with skirting board, picture rail and 2 casement windows.

Study. 8' x 10'6, similar details to the above but much smaller window.

in addition both rooms' doors and doorframes will be painted, both sides, and one of the rooms has a built in wardrobe with 3 doors of about 7'x2 each.

Labour only and does not include making good any surfaces which has already been done.

Seems high to me but the guy comes recommended. I'll be seeking more quotes. Seems high to anyone else?

I'd guess two days work = £600?

Our local decorator charges £120 a day and will do a large room including all wood work in 2.5 days. Personally I feel your two rooms would should be done in 4-days to the quote seems fairly high to me. However we do live in sunny Bournemouth!

West London here £120 a day for someone who knows what they are doing. Just had a newly buit 2 bed flat done and it cost me just shy of £2000 plus the paint etc.
The paint, filler, caulk etc can be bought online at up to half the money.

Thanks guys, this is very useful. I'm assuming you're talking about 2 coats, not just a quick touch up job?

Emulsion dries so fast that on a hot day you can just keep going round smile

How much prep work is there to do ?if minimal then the 2 days is about right unless you are going for a major colour change in the rooms and it needs more than 2 coats.

Depending on where you are you will have to figure in parking cost on the quote which can add another £100 if your more central.

Good point but I have a load of visitor permits already from the council.

In any case his quote was "plus expenses" which he said included things like rollers, brushes, paint trays etc

The only thing I think might push cost up a bit is that each of these two rooms is having a "feature wall" - gf's idea - which is a change of colour from what's under, so may need as much as 3 coats I guess, plus having to get an accurate line of colour change at each edge of that wall. apart from that no real colour change.

Quote doesn't include prep work as he's taking it on already prepped and if there were any faults missed on that front he's got a schedule of additional rates to sort that if we wanted it put right!

fk a duck that's quite the racket!

Why would he need rollers and trays? He should still have them from his previous job. I've painted a dozen or more colours with the same roller frame and sleeve.

When I had some done @ 3 years ago it was at a similar price but that did include making good/prep and supplying the white paints, ie woodwork and ceiling (Kent fwiw).

Seems at lot but not having seen the job who can say ?.My day rate includes tools and expenses but not materials but as you say his price is for labour ony I guess you are supplying materials.I try to get about £130- £140 a day when I give a price it includes travel expenses and public liability insurance etc. From what you have described I would allow 4 days for the work but would need to see it first to confirm it. Might be ten floors up with no lift.

What a fking chancer!

They're tools of the job, if you're a professional tradesman.

Are you sure he didn't used to work for Lehmans or something - knows a bit about 'DIY"?

ETA - trev, above, is spot on.

Well it's ground floor, easy access and I'm not sure how he will choose to travel but it is very close to tube. He's trying it on with price expecting to be haggled down maybe? Probably knows that some clients won't have a clue what it should cost and not everyone will shop around.

Guys I appreciate all these replies. I thought it was a boring subject and might get ignored!

He will need to bring a vehicle whatever. Step ladders, those brushes and rollers, materials, and some sheets. That's why you don't find many decorators driving Mini's !! My brothers new Octavia RS is a bit the other way though.
It may be that he has plenty of work and can price pick the work he wants to do. When my brother is really busy he will add a bit extra. However, if he's quiet he will sharpen his pencil a bit. However, the price does seem a bit outside what we all consider reasonable.
