This tree (eucalyptus) has over the last 6 years grown steadily. However this spring the major branch off the trunk has shed most of its leaves whilst the trunk has not. There is no splitting on the trunk / branch interface..has the branch just died, and if so what action should be taken to limit the damage?

Definitely something wrong with it, it's growing sideways. You sure it's a tree and not a climber?

I'd say, that being on such a steep slope, the water is running off before it can penetrate the ground, thus preventing the roots of nectar.

Mattlan can you rotate the picture for us, so we can look at it properly?

If it were mine I'd chop it out as low as possible and dispose of. You won't lose much in looks/shape. They don't commonly get problems but the fact the whole tree isn't the same suggest it is more likely some sort of blight rather than winter cold damage.

This may help, have a look on BBC iPlayer for 'Hampton Court Palace Flower Show - 2011' episode 3 (from last Friday). At about 43minutes into it Monty talks to a Eucalyptus expert who explains what to do with frost damaged trees. I would post a link to it but not sure how to do it I'm afraid.

Hope that helps.
