Hi,

There is the possibility that I may be relocated from my Leeds office to an office in Cambridge.

This would mean having to sell up and move from the 'Peoples republic of West Yorkshire' to somewhere near Cambridge. I have been to Cambridge a few times and it seems like quite a nice place although very expensive for property.

We have been looking at Ely and Property prices seem reasonable.

Is there anyone on here who lives in Ely that could provide some advice on places to avoid etc?

Many Thanks in advance.

It's horribly expensive for property. Kind of like Harrogate prices but without the bonus of Bettys.

They hate cars and traffic is terrible so factor in commuting - can be worse than the Leeds inner loop.

If you want inexpensive, try Cambourne - new town to West of Cambridge. It's getting quite big now and plenty of pressure on house prices as they keep building new stuff (plenty to rent as well). Also well linked to get to A1 etc to get back to civilisation. Some nice villages to the West as well.

Otherwise, if your company is on south side of Cambridge look towards Hitchin and the towns on the A505 (not Royston). Baldock is quite nice since they built the bypass.

Thanks,

My office would be on the same road as the train station in Cambridge so I would ideally like to live near a station so I don't have to drive.

Do you know where your office is?

There's a load of offices/business parks to the north, off the A14 (which can get horribly jammed at rush hour), if you're there then the problems of getting into the centre are moot.

Everywhere near a train station around there is expensive because it's a pretty quick train ride into London (Cambridge to Kings Cross is comfortably under a hour).

If you'll be commuting by train then Baldock or Hitchin would be my choice, lovely towns and not far from Cambridge for commuting. As you have to work near the station I'd not recommend driving in as it'd be hell with the level of traffic.

I lived in Hitchin for 3 years - very nice market town and good links to London as well. Not cheap, mind...

A very good decision, the Hills Road area gets very very very busy during rush hour.

If the guided busway is ever completed, (august the 7th is the latest date)commuting should be a doddle from anywhere along its route, check out the map as it stretches north a fair distance.
Longstanton and around there will become a much more desirable area.

I visit Ely quote often albeit for fun and by boat; the waterside area is very attractve (and expensive) with some very well restored houses and sympathetic new builds.

Ely's OK, I live St Neots about 20 miles west of Cambridge and been to Ely many times by boat too and it's a nice little town. Train to Cambridge is a big plus 'cos parking and the cost of it in Cambridge is a PITA. Could try a little further north, one station more, Downham Market, same train line to Cambridge but that bit cheaper.

Only thing I would add is there's a saying "don't marry a virgin from the Fens. If she's not good enough for the rest of the family, better you leave her alone."

Fairline Mirage eh?

But perhaps not as your website is dated 2001!

I live near St. Neots too, wouldn't particularly recommend it, it's ok but there is better around. I have a few work friends who live in Ely and love it. South Cambridgeshire is generally very lovely and often wins those lists of "the best all round place to live" but is very expensive, Ely is more reasonable.

There are some tempting properties out in the fens to the NE of Cambridge, if you're web-footed and weird in a new and unique way then you'll fit in well.

I'm going to disagree with you, lived in St Neots now for 10 years and really like the place. No trouble, quiet, good access to major roads and decent ameneties. It has it's bad areas, but then so do a lot of places but it really isn't a bad place to live - obviously not as picturesque as some of the S Cambs villages but then again you do pay for those.

We live 12 miles south of Cambridge in a village called Linton, takes me about 30 mins to get to my office which is a little further into town than station road. House prices are about the same or a little less than Ely.

Next time you are in the cambridge office and fancy a pint, drop me an email..

I am in Cambourne and have been for ten years. It is a new development so obviously does not fit in with Pistonheaders view that all new builds are st but I really like it there and the chances of getting any parking in Cambridge are close to zero. I reckon there must be a few PHers around as there is some tasty metal round the village.

Ely does seem to be good value but is quite remote compared even to Cambridge which is itself not that well connected to the rest of the UK (bar London). Foxton or Meldreth/Melbourne to the South of Cambridge are worth considering as they have stations and are relatively nice places.

I moved to Cambourne 3 months ago, and I like it to, really quiet. It doesn't take long to get into the centre of Cambridge, on a good day I can be in the centre of town in 20 minutes, maximum 25 minutes. Your right, there seems to be some interesting stuff around!

I see you are a Ducati fan, you should meet my friend Darren (who is also on here) he has a 999 and a Monster also in Cambourne.
