Hi all,

We are having problems with our BT line at the moment. We've got no ring tone, and when people call they just get an engaged tone. However the internet works 100% okay?!

Any ideas what the problem may be? I'm loathed to pay BT £130+ to come and tell me it's something simple that I could have fixed myself...

BT have tested the line and confirmed there is no fault, yet when I unplug all the phones / filters in the house, and try using a phone that we know works okay, we still get no dial tone from any of the sockets! frown

I simply can't fathom why broadband is okay, when all the phone sockets are dead for phone use!

Does anyone have any pointers?!

Cheers in advance

broadband will work over 1 wire and a short circuit , the short circuit would give an engaged tone ,unplug everything and ring in from a mobile ,if you get a ringing tone its your equipment ,try the adsl filters first they give this fault if knackered.if still getting engaged tone take front plate off and ring in again, this will rule out a fault on any extn wiring.

find the master socket and remove the lower half, you will find a similar socket behind it. Plug you known good phone into that socket. If it works, then your side of wiring is faulty and needs repairing. If not, then its BT's problem, as that face plate is the demarcation between you and bt.

And don't believe BT when they say they have tested the line and haven't found a fault.

Had a fault on a spare business line many years ago, BT said it was our problem. A telephone engineer customer checked, said it was a BT problem - and they finally fixed it and refunded some of the charges.
