I would like to buy a tree for my parents as a present. Any suggestions on what to buy? Budget £150, and they have a fairly large garden with the usual trees in - apple, pear, cherry, damson etc. Any ideas for good looking interesting tree.

I was going to suggest an ornamental maple, for really striking foliage if there's a relatively sheltered position. Or a corkscrew hazel (Corylus avellana contorta) would look good all year.

Black Poplar are becoming very rare in the UK. Native, good for wildlife and won't get overly big.

If they like fruit - what about a mulberry? They take a few years to get going but are bloody delicious!

If you are looking for something a little 'different, how about a Woolemi Pine ? Thought to be extinct until a few years ago,now reasonably available within your budget. Will grow large but given the space it would be a talking point for a long time...."we have a pre-historic tree".!!

Catalpa (Indian Bean Tree) beautiful tree, huge leaves, forms a wide canopy and at this time of year has beautiful white flowers, we have one at home that we planted in 2006/2007 and it is a lovely tree.
