If you are looking for something a little 'different, how about a Woolemi Pine ? Thought to be extinct until a few years ago,now reasonably available within your budget.Will grow large but given the space it would be a talking point for a long time...."we have a pre-historic tree".!!

Same family as monnkey puzzle! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WollemiaCatalpa (Indian Bean Tree) beautiful tree, huge leaves, forms a wide canopy and at this time of year has beautiful white flowers, we have one at home that we planted in 2006/2007 and it is a lovely tree.
