I'm planning to replace my single garage with a double and due to wifely pressure I don't want to eat up any more of the garden than is strictly necessary.

So is 5 metres adequate width for two cars? To get in and drive each of them.

I guess most cars are c. 2m width so to allow another metre for opening doors and to avoiding scraping walls sounds...tight.

Any experience gratefully received.

IMO 6 metre width [20' old type feet!] is better for 2 cars, If you're goin to the expense of a new garage, then it's better to get what you really want, rather than make do, cost won't be much more either.

Bigger the better, but 5 metres overall external width is really too small.

The smallest typical 'developer' double garages are around 5.2 x 5.2 metres overall external, and they're generally regarded as too small. We've got a few size ranges (to suit various specific design/planning requirements), but on all but the 'poverty spec.' sites, we'd use garages that are 6.56 wide by 6.22 deep, overall.

Our old one (which is being altered next week to become more house rooms) is 6m x 6m, and I'd say that's a bare minimum. My father's is probably closer to 5m x5m and getting in and out of cars, or getting access to shelves at the back is a complete ballache.

A typical Supermarket parking space has to be 2.5m wide by 5m long.

Just to give you a guide!

You need building regs for anything larger than 6x5 external floor area, so it's best to stay under that if you can or it'll usually be much more expensive.
