Toilet Seats

I have a 'normal' looking toilet that needs a new seat/cover. (Prescott came round for lunch and well...)

Before I venture out into the big bad world of Homebase etc, is it safe to assume that generally toilets are all the same size or do I need to be checking for a serial number or such like?

Daft question I know, but I don't dooo stuff like this, so thought I'd check with people better versed in such matters first...
