Swedish police have arrested a 31-year-old man after he asked authorities whether it was legal to build a nuclear reactor in his kitchen.
The mad scientist, who kept track of his experiments on a blog titled Richard's Reactor, came to the attention of the police after he inquired on the legality of constructing a nuclear reactor at home. He was told that somebody would be sent to measure the levels of radiation in his flat.
Those radiation testers showed up, along with a sizable police escort. He posted: "Wednesday, I was arrested and sent to jail, when the police and the Swedish Radiation Safety Authory searched my apartment. They took all my radioactive stuff, but I was released after a hearing. But I am still [a suspect] for crime against the radiation safety law. I was ordered by the police to get out of the building with my hands up, then three men came, with geiger-counters and searched me. Then I was placed in a police-car, when Radiation Safety [Authority] went into my apartment with very advanced measure-tools. So, my project is canceled!"

There's also the nerdy kid who did the same sort of thing in suburban USA. He started by buying up old smoke detectors and luminous clock faces: http://www.wesjones.com/silverstein1.htm
