As I can no longer buy it in the UK, can I buy some in France while we are on holiday?

If so, any problems bringing it back into the country?

Why is it the tree buggers ban everything that works well!!!

"Non" to sodium chlorate:

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorate_de_sodium
"Sodium chlorate in France:Because many accidents, the sodium chlorate has been withdrawn from sale December 31, 2009 .
Sodium chlorate was previously available at a concentration greater than 95% NaClO 3. Because of the frequency of accidents due to its use as an oxidant in explosive reactions, the rate was then lowered to 60%. Mixed with other substances, the sodium chlorate is less reactive thus avoiding accidents, but greatly reduces the effectiveness of the herbicide. It was also the sodium chlorate to 23.7%. The Weed 23.7% NaClO 3, is practically little more responsive and effective as a herbicide."

You can buy sodium chlorate and potassium nitrate in the UK, just not form retail shops. You have to bare in mind that sodium chlorate and creasote or fuel oil(preferably) makes quite a large bang when made into a bomb. That is also part of the reason why it is harder to get hold off.

I used to mix sodium chlorate and sugar in jam jars, bury them in the ground in our garden, add accelerant, light and cover them over when I was a teenager. I won't let my kids do anything similar!

It's less about tree huggers I think.

More than one is a carcinogen an the other easy to make bombs with, I think... (though creosote is a pretty environmentally damaging production process as well)

Creosote can still be obtained in the UK, but only by professional users, in quantities of 25l and 200l (I believe).

See this recent thread for more discussion: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
