Bathroom lights - regulations

Hi all,

We've had a survey done on a property, and it's highlighted that the bathroom spot lights are not humidity rated and so are against current regulations. I'm not hugely bothered; as hopefully (!) it's an easy fix for us to do in the few months after we move in.

However, an inspection was done in 2006 of the property electrics etc and nothing is mentioned about this. We have a "Domestic Electrical Installation Certificate" from the current vendor for a complete re-wire.

My question is were the regulations different back in 2006 and hence why the lights might not have been an issue back then?

It sounds like the surveyor is talking b*ll*cks (now there's a surprise!). Can you describe a bit about how they are mounted? I assume they are on the ceiling and greater than 2.25m from the floor?

I spoke to the surveyor last night, and as it's got a certificate for re-wiring then "... it's probably alright..." Aargh!

Yes - they're spots on a ceiling definately more than 2m from the floor. I can't remember the exact placement, but I do remember there weren't many near the bath / shower.

Surveys can make you worry about everything; whereas most of it is either normal maintanence you'd have to do or it's them covering their backs.

The 17th edition of the IEE wiring regulations was published in January 2008, and includes provisions for bathrooms as special locations. The first amendment was published earlier this year.
