Biennial Gas meter inspection

Current rented house needs a meter inspection - card says to check for gas safety & correct value. I'm sure there's probably a slant towards value - especially seeing as the letter comes from 'Revenue recovery'.
Anyway, missed the guy a couple of times - but left his number and asked me to call.
He says he's not too bothered about coming, just check the reading and call him up and he will pretend he has come, as long as I don't smell gas.
This is easier for me, but if he does this at every house he comes across, then there could be potential nasty consequences eventually.
Do I:
a) Ring him later, give him the reading and think nothing of it
b) Ring up the company and let them know what he suggested
